Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN) is an intravenous mixture of sugars, vitamins, electrolytes and minerals formulated individually for each patient. The pharmacist and physician work together in interpreting your laboratory results and nutritional needs to customize the formula. TPN is given through an intravenous central line which can be inserted in the home or hospital. TPN is indicated for conditions such as short bowel syndrome, Crohn's disease, cancer, HIV/AIDS, wasting syndrome, hyperemesis and tube feeding failure. TPN should be considered whenever a person cannot meet their nutritional needs by eating or supplementing via a feeding tube. Your MediLink nurse will teach you how to administer the TPN and visit you twice a week to monitor your progress. Laboratory studies will be done at least weekly to measure the effectiveness of the formula in supplying your body's needs.
