Crohn's Disease

Crohn's Disease is a chronic and serious inflammatory disease of the gastrointestional tract that affects more than 500,000 men and women in America. However, a diagnosis of Crohn's Disease can be difficult because the signs and symptoms of Crohn's are similar to other bowel disorders. Crohn's Disease can produce serious complications such as obstruction, fistulas, abscess or free perforation of the bowel. The liklihood of experiencing complications depends upon the severity of the disease and varies from patient to patient. Chronic complications that require ongoing management may include anemia, malnutrition, skin disorders and growth retardation. Each case may warrent a different type of treatment depending on the severity and whether complications are present. Some treatment options include anti-inflammatory medications, immunosuppressive medications, antibiotics, antidiarrheal medications, nutritional supplements, and/or surgery. Remicade may be indicated for relieving signs and symptoms and inducing and maintaining clincial remission in patients with moderatly to severely active Crohn's Disease who have had an inadequate response to traditional therapy. This IV medication can be safely administered in the home or physician's office and requires a single infusion approximately every eight weeks after the initial three doses have been given. Upon physician's order, MediLink Homecare will send a Registered Nurse to insert your IV and administer the medication in the privacy and comfort of your own home.
